FOR MORE INFORMATION Job Description Position Overview The Minister of Music shall provide visionary leadership for the church’s music ministry, enriching worship through diverse musical expressions and striving for excellence in performance, conducting and program administration to support the church’s mission: Love God, Love Others, Reach Out. This role blends choral direction, organ and piano performance, worship planning, and the cultivation of a vibrant, intergenerational music program. The Minister of Music shall work collaboratively with the pastor(s), staff and volunteers to plan worship, lead choirs and ensembles, maintain instruments, and foster congregational participation in sacred music. Sea Island Presbyterian Church in Beaufort, South Carolina is an active congregation of more than 600 members affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The area features a nationally recognized historic district, several colleges, numerous restaurants and shops, art galleries and museums, nearby parks and beaches, and a wide variety of festivals and events that celebrate the vibrant Lowcountry culture. Accountability 1. Report to the Pastor/Head of Staff (or Senior Pastor). 2. Work closely with the Worship & Music Committee and other ministry teams. Core Responsibilities 1. Worship Leadership & Planning a. Collaborate with pastors to select music appropriate to the liturgical calendar and theological themes. b. Provide organ and piano leadership for worship, including preludes, postludes, hymns, service music and accompaniment. c. Direct adult choir and other ensembles in weekly worship. d. Prepare and rehearse with choirs, soloists and instrumentalists as needed. e. Plan and coordinate music for special services (Christmas, Holy Week, weddings, funerals, etc.). f. Offer a range of musical styles within the denominational framework. g. Arrange back-up for organist/choir director as needed. 2. Rehearsal Direction & Ensemble Development a. Lead weekly choir rehearsals during the program year; schedule additional rehearsals as needed. b. Recruit, mentor and support choir members and volunteer musicians. c. Lead or facilitate additional ensembles such as handbells, children’s choirs, etc. d. Encourage participation from congregational instrumentalists and singers. 2 3. Program Administration a. Maintain and organize the music library; ensure copyright compliance and licensing. b. Oversee the care, tuning and maintenance of all church instruments. c. Manage the music budget and coordinate purchases of music, supplies, and equipment. d. Provide timely information for bulletins and other communications. e. Hire and supervise guest musicians and substitutes. f. Collaborate with technical staff volunteers to operate sanctuary sound system. 4. Congregational Engagement & Education a. Foster congregational singing and musical participation. b. Support children and youth music in collaboration with relevant staff. 5. Professional Development a. Participate in continuing education, conferences and professional organizations. b. Stay informed about trends in sacred music, worship arts and technology. Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in music or sacred music, or equivalent experience. • Strong proficiency in organ and piano performance, choral conducting, sight-reading and worship leadership. • Experience leading sacred music programs (3+ years preferred). • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers and musicians of varied skill levels. • Knowledge of Reformed/Presbyterian worship, hymnody, and liturgical flow. • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. • Commitment to diverse musical styles and to nurturing a welcoming, inclusive music ministry. The individual will work with ALCM’s executive director and office staff as well as planning committees to ensure tasks related to ALCM’s educational programs are executed in a timely and high-quality manner. Our music ministry is an essential part of our worship life, featuring a dedicated Chancel Choir, Handbell Ministry, and a growing Children's Music Program. Job Summary: We seek a talented and collegial Associate Organist to join our Music Ministry team. The ideal candidate will accompany congregational singing, support the Chancel Choir, and collaborate closely with the Director of Music Ministries to enhance the worship experience. This part-time position offers flexibility and could be an excellent fit for the right person.
